The Ark

Location: Ashaley Botwe
Floor Area: 450m2
Client: Cecil Abbey
Project team: Architect: IAC, Structural:, Mechanical:, Electrical:, QS
Project Timeline: 2010 to 2012
Type: Single-unit Residential

A design inspiration taken from Noah’s Ark; this building embodies a sense of detail and richness in design. The vibrant and diverse design features comprise a rich mix of traditional and contemporary design styles.

An amazing forecourt garden envelopes the building in a serene tropical atmosphere enhancing its micro-climate. The Ark is covered partly with reclaimed wooden pallets. The combination of traditional architecture with modern elements gives the building an overall eclectic feel. This can be seen evidently

in the design of the interior spaces. The ground floor portrays a contemporary atmosphere. The first floor is a mix of traditional and modern architecture and the last floor (the loft) has a total traditional look with exposed wooden rafters. The ambiance in the building’s micro-environment is greatly enhanced by the presence of the fountain, the roof garden and the skylights. Overall, the design reflects a sustainable and eco-friendly solution to sub-urban living, featuring elements such as solar energy, large windows, cross ventilation and recycled materials.
