The Rwenzori

Location: Akropong, Eastern Region
Floor Area: 860m2
Client: The Lokko Family
Project team: IAC, ACEQ Consult
Project Timeline: 2016
Type: Single-family residential

The Rwenzori is not only a family home in a tranquil environment endowed with pristine green sceneries of the downhill gradients surrounding Akropong, but also evokes an ecocentric aura by fitting nicely into its terrain while allowing maximum water permeability on its exterior spaces.

To achieve the latter, flat quarried stones sourced in the locality are interspersed with grass strips to pave the front yard of the property. The seven-bedroom house, designed for the Lokkos as a getaway home, adopts features of the vernacular style of old buildings constructed in Akropong from circa the latter years of the first quarter of the 20th Century that responded directly to the climate and the domestic conditions of traditional Akuapem extended families. An activity hub in its fullness that will accommodate the extended family, the house features two kitchens, five ensuite standard bedrooms, a master bedroom, a guestroom, 3 study rooms, and a dining area with a cellar.

Through the wide and high windows of the master bedroom, it feels like levitating on the fogs of the humid climes of the Eastern Region. The views from the master bedroom are soothing but also telling of the transcendence found in the composite effect of natural phenomena that leisurely praise the might of their creator through their harmonious coexistence. Outdoor and indoor are connected with high windows while deep balconies – partly shaded, partly exposed – spoil the user with options to either enjoy the balmy sunbeams pushing their way through thick foggy masses or find shelter under the shaded part of the balconies when the sun finally wins through the humid atmosphere. From the dark toned timber flooring, through the spiral staircase with its polished wood treads to the ceiling of the living area, one enjoys a journey that exudes the essence of the house’s immediate surroundings, the forests that possess both beauty and usefulness.
